Kazakhstan and Georgia to Boost Collaboration in Energy and Transport Sectors

During the Georgian delegation’s official visit to Astana, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy Yerlan Akkenjenov and Georgia’s Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili met to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation in the energy and transport sectors, according to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy.

Yerlan Akkenjenov congratulated Mariam Kvrivishvili on her appointment and expressed confidence in strengthening economic ties between the two countries, The Caspian Post reports citing AKIpress.

A key topic of discussion was the diversification of routes for Kazakh hydrocarbon supplies through Georgia.

The Minister highlighted the stable operation of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, which transported 1.4 million tons of Kazakh oil in 2024. The volume is projected to increase to 1.5 million tons in 2025.

The parties also discussed the development of Kazakh assets in Georgia, specifically the Batumi Sea Port and the oil terminal, along with the potential for joint "green" energy projects. They explored ways to integrate the Trans-Caspian Energy Corridor and Georgia's project to lay a high-voltage cable across the Black Sea.

Later, Prime Minister Oljas Bektenov met with Mariam Kvrivishvili. Their talks covered expanding trade, investments, and developing transport infrastructure. The Georgian direction was emphasized as a crucial element of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route.

Particular attention was given to the launch of the Kazakh container terminal in Poti Port, with a capacity of 120,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) per year. This facility, built by PTC Holding, marks Kazakhstan's first infrastructure project implemented in a Georgian sea hub. According to the Prime Minister, this will strengthen the positions of both countries as key logistics centers of the Middle Corridor.

Following the negotiations, both sides agreed to continue cooperation within the framework of the Intergovernmental Commission and intensify joint efforts to boost trade and economic ties, including the supply of Kazakh agricultural products to the Georgian market and the development of tourism exchanges.
