A certificate confirming legal stay in Georgia will become mandatory from September 1 for applicants seeking certain types of residence permits, under new rules adopted by Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The changes introduce additional documentation requirements for several residence permit categories, according to Sputnik Georgia.

Foreign nationals applying for a residence permit based on university studies will be required to study at a higher education institution officially authorized by the Georgian government.

Applicants must also provide a certificate from the university confirming their enrollment and the duration of their studies.

Additional requirements will apply to applications for permanent residence permits by children of Georgian citizens and their parents. Along with other required documents, applicants will need to submit proof of their legal stay in Georgia as well as evidence of a legal source of income in the country.

The new rules are set to take effect on September 1 as Georgia updates the documentation requirements for foreigners applying for residence permits.
