Georgian Refutes Claims of Suspended EU Relations, Calls Accusations ‘Incorrect’

Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili rejected claims that the Georgian government had "suspended its relations" with the European Union, calling such allegations "incorrect" and misleading.

In an interview with Imedi TV on Sunday, Botchorishvili emphasized that Georgia remains committed to its relationship with the EU within the existing framework, The Caspian Post reports.

She stated, "We are always ready and have been ready to maintain relations within the framework that exists with the European Union, and not through public statements that damage everything."

Botchorishvili also pointed to the European Parliament's frequent adoption of resolutions with what she described as "incorrect interpretations and messages," which she believes have undermined the relationship. "When the European Parliament adopts five resolutions a year with absolutely incorrect interpretations, of course, this does not contribute to maintaining relations in a normal framework," she added.

The minister also clarified that it was the European Union that decided in June to limit dialogue with Georgia, not the other way around. "We were accused of suspending relations, when in fact, it was the EU that took the decision to limit our interactions," Botchorishvili explained.

Despite the current negative dynamic in relations, the top Georgian diplomat expressed confidence that the situation would improve soon. "I believe that the circumstances that have changed these relations towards a negative dynamic will soon no longer exist, and the European Union will have the desire to restore relations to the framework they existed in before," she concluded.
