Irakli Kobakhidze Voices Concern Over Nakhchivan Drone Attack in Talk with Ilham Aliyev

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze spoke by phone with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev after the drone attack on Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, expressing concern about the incident and offering solidarity to Azerbaijan.

Based on the information released by the Georgian government, Kobakhidze condemned the attack and emphasized Georgia’s support for Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, The Caspian Post reports, citing foreign media.

During the call, the Georgian prime minister noted that stability and security in the South Caucasus remain essential for regional cooperation and development.

The drone strike targeted sites in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an Azerbaijani exclave bordering Iran, Turkey, and Armenia. Azerbaijani authorities reported that drones launched from Iranian territory struck the terminal building of Nakhchivan International Airport, while another drone fell near a school in the village of Shakarabad. Two civilians were reportedly injured in the attacks.

In response, Azerbaijan strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a “terrorist act” against the state. President Aliyev announced that the country’s armed forces had been instructed to prepare and implement retaliatory measures.

The developments come amid heightened tensions between Iran and Azerbaijan, whose relations have periodically deteriorated in recent years due to geopolitical rivalries, border security issues, and disagreements over regional transport corridors. Nakhchivan’s strategic location along key energy and transit routes linking the Caspian region with Turkey and Europe has made security in the area particularly sensitive for the wider South Caucasus.

Georgia maintains close political and economic ties with Azerbaijan, particularly through major regional energy and transportation projects that pass through Georgian territory. Georgian officials have repeatedly stressed that stability in neighboring countries is crucial for maintaining peace and economic cooperation across the region.
