A police officer in northern Iran has died after being stabbed during a confrontation in Talesh County.

The officer, identified as Erfan Shakouri, was injured while taking part in the arrest of a man accused of smuggling goods, The Caspian Post reports via Iran International.

The incident occurred during an operation that escalated into a clash, during which the officer sustained serious stab wounds.

He was later taken for medical treatment but died from his injuries.
