EU Spokesman for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Anouar El Anouni has said that Iran must not possess nuclear weapons, and its nuclear program does not provide convincing evidence that it is pursuing peaceful objectives.
At a briefing in Brussels, the EU spokesman stated that they do not believe Iran has a credible civilian nuclear program, responding to a question about whether the EU, despite its criticism of Iran, still acknowledges the possibility of a peaceful nuclear program in Tehran as outlined in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), The Caspian Post reports via Russian media.
He emphasized that the position of the European Union is clear, as is that of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, stating that Iran must never possess nuclear weapons. He added that they will continue supporting all diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and finding a credible solution to the Iranian nuclear issue- a challenge that can only be resolved through negotiation.
The EU spokesman mentioned, in this context, a recent joint statement by Kallas and the "E3" - the United Kingdom, Germany, and France - which expressed longstanding concern over the expansion of Iran’s nuclear program, noting that it lacks a credible peaceful purpose.
El Anouni added that the EU and the E3 "reaffirm their support for the IAEA and its director general."
He added that they reaffirm the EU’s firm commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons as a cornerstone of preventing nuclear proliferation and hold Iran accountable for failing to comply with its obligations under this treaty.
