Iran and Turkmenistan have held talks to boost cooperation on Caspian Sea issues, focusing on regional development and preparations for the 7th Caspian littoral states summit in Tehran in 2026.
Officials discussed joint initiatives, environmental challenges, and the possible relocation of the Tehran Convention Secretariat, highlighting the need for closer bilateral and regional collaboration, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.
Diplomatic ties were established after Turkmenistan’s independence in 1991, and since then, both countries have focused on cross-border trade, gas and electricity exports, and transport connectivity. They collaborate on Caspian Sea issues, water management, and regional stability, while maintaining strong cultural and historical links through shared ethnic and linguistic communities.
