US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of refusing to permit international inspections of its nuclear program and continuing its uranium enrichment activities, raising renewed concerns over Tehran’s atomic ambitions.
The US leader made the comments to journalists aboard Air Force One while traveling to New Jersey following Independence Day celebrations at the White House, The Caspian Post reports per foreign media.
Trump asserted that he believed Iran’s nuclear program had been permanently pushed back. He added that if Iran attempted to restart it, it would likely be at a different facility, and warned that such a move would pose a serious problem.
The president also announced plans to discuss the Iranian nuclear file with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the Israeli leader’s upcoming visit to Washington on July 7. Trump reiterated his stance that he would not allow Iran to revive its nuclear capabilities, alleging that Tehran has shown interest in entering direct negotiations.
In a related development, Iran’s parliament has approved legislation suspending cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The move will remain in effect until Tehran receives firm assurances regarding the security and sovereignty of its nuclear infrastructure.
