U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he is weighing the option of deploying a second aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East as a contingency measure should negotiations with Iran fail.

“Either we will make a deal or we will have to do something very tough like last time,” Trump said in an interview with Axios, The Caspian Post reports.

He added that he expects the second round of talks between the United States and Iran to take place next week. Referring to current military movements, Trump said, “We have an armada that is heading there and another one might be going,” noting that he is “thinking” about sending an additional aircraft carrier strike group to the region.

Trump voiced optimism about the diplomatic track, arguing that Iran is now far more serious about negotiations because of the credible military threat. According to him, Tehran “wants to make a deal very badly” and is engaging more seriously than in previous rounds of talks.

“Last time they didn’t believe I would do it,” Trump said, referring to his decision to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities in June. “They overplayed their hand.”

He stressed that it was a “no-brainer” for any agreement to include Iran’s nuclear program, while also saying he believes a deal should address Iran’s ballistic missile stockpiles as well.

“We can make a great deal with Iran,” Trump said.
