The United States has imposed new sanctions on Iran, targeting political and security officials over the government’s crackdown on antigovernment protesters.
The penalties, announced on Tuesday, focus on Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), and several other officials identified as the “architects” of Tehran’s “brutal” response to demonstrations, The Caspian Post reports.
“The United States stands firmly behind the Iranian people in their call for freedom and justice,” US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said.
“At the direction of President Trump, the Treasury Department is sanctioning key Iranian leaders involved in the brutal crackdown against the Iranian people. Treasury will use every tool to target those behind the regime’s tyrannical oppression of human rights,” she added.
The sanctions freeze the individuals’ US-based assets and prohibit American citizens from conducting business with them.
Larijani is a close adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
