The US military has developed new strike plans for Iran that reportedly include the possible use of the GBU-43/B MOAB, known as the “Mother of All Bombs,” against energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities.

US President Donald Trump has ordered the preparation of additional military options, including strikes on Iranian energy facilities. The potential use of the massive non-nuclear bomb is also being considered for operations targeting Iranian nuclear sites, including the Pickaxe Mountain complex, according to CNN.

However, no decision has been made to resume attacks on Iran.

The White House declined to comment on potential military plans, saying Trump retains all options to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

The GBU-43/B MOAB weighs approximately 9.8 tonnes and is designed to generate a powerful blast over a wide area rather than penetrate deeply buried underground facilities.

Using the bomb near populated areas could also result in civilian casualties.

The US first used the MOAB in combat in Afghanistan in 2017, during Trump's first presidential term. The strike targeted a tunnel complex used by the Islamic State group.

US military planners have prepared other potential courses of action as the Trump administration explores ways to bring the conflict with Iran to an end. The latest plans reportedly form part of broader preparations, rather than a confirmed decision to launch new strikes.
