The skies above Kaskelen in Kazakhstan’s Almaty region have transformed into a spectacular display of color as the Qazaqstan International Balloon Festival brings together pilots and visitors from across Central Asia and beyond.

This year’s festival features 29 hot air balloons, including several eye-catching special designs such as a giant owl-shaped balloon. Pilots from Kazakhstan, Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Russia, and Uzbekistan are taking part in the event, turning the region into a major attraction for aviation enthusiasts and tourists alike, The Caspian Post reports via Kazinform.

Organizers say preparations for the festival begin up to a year in advance, reflecting its growing importance on Kazakhstan’s tourism calendar. Officials expect the event to boost visitor numbers and strengthen the region’s reputation as a destination for international festivals.

Beyond the balloon flights, guests can enjoy giant kite shows, food courts, camping areas, family entertainment, children’s activities, and even a unique opportunity to propose marriage during a hot air balloon ride.

More than 700 people, including pilots, technical experts, volunteers, and security personnel, are involved in organizing the festival. Visitors have traveled from neighboring countries, including Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, to witness the colorful spectacle.

The event also highlights the growing popularity of ballooning in Kazakhstan, where commercial flights are now available in Almaty, Astana, Karaganda, and Oskemen. Aspiring pilots can undergo specialized training and certification within the country.

Kazakhstan’s first balloon festival, held in 2017, attracted over 20,000 visitors, while the 2023 edition drew more than 60,000 people in just two days. Organizers hope this year’s festival will build on that success and become a lasting tradition.
