Kazakhstan and Germany have discussed expanding cooperation in environmental protection, climate policy and sustainable development, with preparations for the upcoming COP31 climate summit high on the agenda.

The issues were discussed during a meeting between Kazakhstan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Alibek Kuantyrov and German Ambassador to Kazakhstan Heike Renate Peitsch, who was appointed to the post in August 2026, Qazinform News Agency reports.

Particular attention was given to Kazakhstan’s preparations for the 31st Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31). The two sides also exchanged views on international climate initiatives, including the COP28 decision to transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems in a just, orderly and equitable manner.

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources highlighted ongoing cooperation with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), particularly in climate resilience, sustainable land management, renewable energy, energy efficiency and green hydrogen development.

Joint environmental projects in the Aral Sea region were also discussed.

Another key area of cooperation is biodiversity conservation. The sides reviewed Kazakhstan’s initiatives to restore the population of the Turan tiger and reintroduce Przewalski’s horses into their natural habitat.

Cooperation on protecting the Caspian Sea was also on the agenda.

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and expanding practical cooperation on environmental protection and climate action.
