Kazakhstan Sees Slow Surge in Electric Vehicle Interest

President of the Kazakhstan Automobile Union Anar Makasheva has said that electric vehicles (EVs) currently account for less than 1 per cent of Kazakhstan’s national car fleet, but interest in eco-friendly transport is steadily gaining momentum.

“In 2019, the country imported fewer than 1,000 electric vehicles annually. Today, that number has increased to approximately 16,000,” Makasheva said. “While still a small fraction of the total car fleet, it reflects a growing public interest in environmentally conscious alternatives, including hybrids and vehicles compliant with Euro-5 emissions standards,” The Caspian Post reports, citing Kazakh media.

Makasheva also noted the rapid development of EV infrastructure nationwide. Charging stations are now being installed at a growing number of gas stations, shopping centres, and other public locations, making electric mobility more accessible.

“Drivers can now use maps and navigation apps to find the nearest EV chargers,” she said. “However, Kazakhstan’s long travel distances often make hybrid vehicles more practical than fully electric models.”

According to Almaty’s municipal parking operator, Almaty Parking, more than 300 EV charging stations had been installed on private properties in the city as of January 22.
