Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has been informed during a high-level meeting with KazMunayGas Chairman Askhat Khassenov that Kazakhstan’s energy sector remains on an upward trajectory.
Khassenov briefed the head of state on the national oil and gas company’s 2025 performance and its strategic priorities for the year ahead, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.
New International Partnerships
In 2025, KazMunayGas signed subsoil use agreements with China’s CNOOC and Sinopec for the Zhylyoi project in Atyrau region and the Berezovskiy project in West Kazakhstan region.
Meanwhile, Turkish Petroleum Corporation, BP and the Croatian Hydrocarbon Agency are exploring promising sites in Kazakhstan.
The company is placing a strong emphasis on deep and underexplored geological areas. Eight exploration wells were drilled last year, with 24 more planned by 2029. Total investment in exploration is expected to exceed $900 million.
Rising Output and Refining Growth
KazMunayGas reported oil and gas condensate production of 26.2 million tons in 2025 - a 10% year-on-year increase. Plans are underway to boost gas output by 2.3 billion cubic meters annually at the Zapadnaya Prorva, Tsentralnyi Urikhtau and Rozhkovskoye fields.
Three refineries operated by the company processed 17.5 million tons of oil last year. Production of light petroleum products reached 13.6 million tons, surpassing 2024 levels by 1.2 million tons.
$15B Investment Drive
Khassenov also outlined major petrochemical and gas processing projects worth more than $15 billion. Among key developments is the launch of the Kenderli seawater desalination plant in Mangystau region, with a capacity of 50,000 cubic meters per day.
