Teen Wrestlers Fall Ill at Kazakhstan's Training Camp

Twenty-two teenagers from Kyzylorda Region, Kazakhstan have been hospitalized after falling ill at the Turan Recreation Area, where they were taking part in wrestling training camps.

On January 21, 2026, at around 10:40 p.m. (GMT+5), 22 minors aged between 12 and 17 were taken to the Merken District Multidisciplinary Central Hospital, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

The teenagers had arrived from Kyzylorda Region to participate in training sessions. Doctors issued a preliminary diagnosis of gastroenteritis of unknown origin.

Laboratory samples have been collected from the patients and food products to determine the cause of the illness and identify possible sources of infection. The regional department of sanitary and epidemiological control has launched an inspection, with test results still pending.

Officials noted that a total of 103 young athletes and 13 coaches were staying at the recreation area at the time. The condition of those hospitalized is assessed as mild, with all patients under constant medical supervision. Medical examinations of the remaining children showed no signs of illness, while preventive measures at the site are ongoing.
