Tightened Checks Cause Truck Backlogs at Kazakh–Kyrgyz Border

Heavy truck congestion has built up along the Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan border after Kazakh authorities tightened inspection procedures.

Commenting on the situation, Association of International Road Carriers of Kyrgyzstan Deputy Chairman Igor Golubev told journalists that enhanced checks by Kazakhstan’s Border Service and the Committee of State Revenues of Kazakhstan have led to a buildup of cargo vehicles at crossing points, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.

Golubev noted that such intensive inspections are carried out periodically, but this time they have caused particularly long delays. At the Ken-Bulun checkpoint, empty trucks have reportedly been standing idle, creating extended traffic jams. A similar situation has emerged at the Karasu checkpoint, where a massive queue of freight vehicles has stretched beyond a cement plant near the city of Kant.

He added that the association is in constant contact with state authorities and stressed the urgent need to modernize border checkpoints along the Kyrgyz-Kazakh frontier. Golubev said that the issue has been included in Kyrgyzstan’s broader development program aimed at positioning the country as a logistics hub by 2030.

“The program must be implemented to minimize queues and improve the efficiency of cargo transit,” he said.

Earlier reports indicated that freight traffic at one of the checkpoints on the border with Kazakhstan had almost completely come to a halt, with drivers claiming they had been unable to cross for three consecutive days.

The Eurasian Economic Commission also commented on the situation, explaining that delays at certain sections of the border are linked to planned and targeted control measures aimed at preventing illegal trade. The Kazakh side, in turn, emphasized that the measures are temporary and do not affect the overall framework of Eurasian integration.
