Kyrgyzstan to Launch 18 Small Hydropower Plants in 2025

In 2025, Kyrgyzstan plans to commission 18 small hydropower plants with a total installed capacity of 69.8 MW, as stated by Adylbek Kasymaliev, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Head of the Presidential Administration, during an extended meeting on the results of the Cabinet of Ministers' activities for the first four months of the current year.

The head of the Cabinet noted that on March 31, 2025, with the participation of President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov and President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, a new stage of the CASA-1000 project was launched, The Caspian Post reports citing Kabar. A significant event was the commissioning of the Datka-Sughd high-voltage power transmission line, which united the energy systems of the two countries.

"This has become an important step towards the implementation of a transregional energy project aimed at exporting electricity from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is also important to note the progress of key energy projects. For the construction project Kambarata HPP-1, documents on updating the feasibility study and assessing the impact on the environment and social environment are in the final stage.

An intergovernmental agreement on the joint implementation of the project by Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan is being prepared. In April, negotiations on promoting the project were held in Washington as part of the Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund. Large-scale preparatory work and coordination of approval stages are underway.

Work is underway to commission the second hydroelectric unit of Kambarata HPP-2, and to build an upper spillway structure.

Construction of new hydroelectric power plants is underway: the Orto-Tokoy hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 21 MW, the Karakul hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 18 MW, and the Papan hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 25 MW,” said Adylbek Kasymaliev.

According to him, in total it is planned to commission 18 small hydropower plants with a total installed capacity of 69.8 MW in 2025.
