Brussels Eyes Five Possible Measures Against Israel Amid Gaza Concerns

The EU is anticipated to present approximately five potential actions against Israel next week in response to its activities in Gaza.

However, due to significant internal disagreement among member states, few - if any of these proposals are likely to move forward, The Caspian Post reports via Euractiv.

A recent internal review by the EU of its trade agreement with Israel, which Euractiv obtained last month, concluded there were "indications of a breach" of the human rights clauses embedded in the deal.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the EU’s diplomatic branch, the European External Action Service (EEAS), is preparing to share a formal document outlining these options with EU ambassadors.

Proposals in the document reportedly include either a complete or partial suspension of the trade agreement, sanctions targeting specific individuals-such as Israeli officials, military figures, or extremist settlers-restrictions on trade, an arms embargo, and a halt to scientific cooperation.

While many of these ideas have been informally discussed before, this will mark the first time they are officially put into writing.

Foreign ministers from EU member states are due to examine the proposals at their meeting in Brussels on July 15-the final session before the summer recess. That date is also being treated as a soft deadline for Israel to show tangible improvements in the humanitarian conditions in Gaza. Israel has denounced the EU’s findings as "outrageous" and "full of methodological shortcomings."

“The first goal is to change behaviour on the ground (...). If the situation does not improve, then we can discuss further measures,” EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas said last month.
