Türkiye's Communications Directorate on Friday dismissed claims circulating on social media that the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement signed by Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan conflicts with Article 5 of the NATO treaty or establishes a parallel military alliance.

Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty is NATO's collective defense provision, which states that an armed attack against one member is regarded as an attack against all members, The Caspian Post reports, citing Anadolu.

In a statement published on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, the Directorate's Center for Countering Disinformation (DMM) described the allegations as "completely false" and characterized them as "a perception management campaign whose source is readily apparent."

The DMM said the agreement does not conflict with Türkiye's existing international alliance commitments, including its obligations as a NATO member. Instead, it said the pact functions as a complementary mechanism aimed at supporting regional security.

"Türkiye's efforts to strengthen regional partnerships are not an alternative to its NATO membership," the statement said.

It also stressed that the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement "is not an aggressive military bloc but a defense-oriented arrangement designed to strengthen deterrence."

According to the DMM, the agreement is not directed against any third country or alliance. Rather, it seeks to expand cooperation in the defense industry, military training, technology sharing and initiatives aimed at reinforcing regional stability.

The center also called on the public not to believe what it described as "unfounded claims and manipulative posts."

The statement followed remarks made earlier on Friday by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who said the agreement, signed in Mecca alongside Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, is not aimed at any country and remains open to other friendly nations seeking peace, prosperity and stability in the region.

Erdogan said the pact is based on the principle of collective deterrence and will strengthen defense cooperation, promote joint defense industry projects and enhance counterterrorism efforts. He also reaffirmed Türkiye's commitment to resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy in accordance with international law.
