6.0-Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Afghanistan, Hundreds Feared Dead

A powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan on September 1 morning, according to the US Geological Survey.

The tremors were recorded about 27 kilometers from Jalalabad and 200 kilometers from the capital, Kabul, The Caspian Post reports via foreign media.

At least 500 people have been killed and more than 1,000 injured, the Kunar Disaster Management Authority reported, noting that the province has suffered the highest number of casualties so far.

Rescue operations are underway as emergency teams continue to search for survivors and clear debris. Authorities warned that the death toll and number of injuries could rise as efforts progress.
