Two local residents were injured after being attacked by a bear while searching for missing calves in Russia’s Buryatia region.

The men were looking for the animals near a forest belt in the Khara-Shibir ulus when they encountered a large bear, according to SHOT.

The animal initially attacked one of the men. The second man fired a gun, prompting the bear to turn toward him.

The first victim, while on the ground, managed to retrieve a carbine and shoot the animal.

The two men called for help and were later taken to a hospital in Ulan-Ude with lacerations. They are currently receiving medical treatment.
