Could Türkiye Be Drawn Into a Nuclear Arms Race?

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has warned that Türkiye could be compelled to enter a nuclear arms race if new nuclear powers emerge in the region.

He made the remarks while discussing the possibility of Iran developing nuclear weapons, The Caspian Post reports, citing CNN Turk.

“This issue must be evaluated within the broader strategic context. Honestly, we do not want to witness dramatic shifts in the region that could disrupt the existing balance of power. Countries facing challenges with Iran will start pursuing nuclear weapons, and we may, in turn, be forced to join this race,” Fidan explained.

When asked directly whether Türkiye would want to acquire nuclear weapons, the minister responded with a silent smile.
