Istanbul has been placed under an orange weather alert as Türkiye’s meteorological authorities warn of heavy downpours, thunderstorms and strong winds across the city.
The warning was issued by the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM), TRT Haber reports.
According to forecasters, thunderstorms are expected across Istanbul, with the heaviest rainfall forecast for the city’s eastern districts and its Asian side, particularly areas near Kocaeli and Sakarya provinces.
Northerly and northeasterly winds, known locally as poyraz, are expected to strengthen to between 50 and 70 kilometers per hour.
The adverse weather could disrupt maritime transport and cause damage to rooftops, while trees and utility poles may also be brought down. The Bosphorus area and the Princes’ Islands are expected to face particularly challenging conditions.
Temperatures in Istanbul are forecast to fall to between 11°C and 15°C.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution, especially motorists, warning of possible flash floods, localized hail, lightning strikes, strong winds and transport disruptions.
Residents are advised to follow official weather updates and take precautions as the storm approaches.
