Russian forces launched a massive overnight drone assault on Ukraine, deploying 135 Shahed-type and other UAVs that struck civilian areas in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions.

In Sumy city, the attack damaged residential buildings and civilian infrastructure and injured six people, including a 16-year-old girl, Kyiv Post reported.

In the Kharkiv region, two women were killed and two people were injured after Russian drones struck the village of Lebyazhe in the Chuhuiv district.

Drone attack damages homes and infrastructure in Sumy

Russian drones attacked Sumy early on Friday, Aug. 21, causing fires in residential areas and injuring six people, according to Serhii Kryvosheyenko, head of the Sumy City Military Administration (MVA).

The massive UAV attack targeted civilian infrastructure and the residential sector in the city’s Kovpakiv district, Kryvosheyenko said.

One of the strikes caused a fire in a two-story residential building. Fires also broke out at several other locations.

The threat of additional Russian strikes complicated the work of rescuers, according to Kryvosheyenko.

Six people were injured in the attack: a 16-year-old girl, four women aged 36, 39, 50 and 66, and a 35-year-old man. All are receiving medical treatment.

Nine residential buildings were damaged at four locations across the city. Damage included broken windows and balcony frames. A shop, gas-station infrastructure, sections of roadway and several vehicles were also damaged.

Emergency and recovery crews are continuing to clear the consequences of the attack.

Two killed in Russian drone strike on Kharkiv region

The State Emergency Service (DSNS) reported that two people were killed and two others injured in a separate massive drone attack on the Kharkiv region.

Russian forces overnight targeted the village of Lebyazhe in the Chuhuiv district, striking a residential area.

The attack destroyed and damaged several private homes and sparked a fire covering approximately 400 square meters. Five residential buildings and vehicles caught fire.
