A Turkish soldier has died after being wounded while security forces were attempting to prevent an illegal border crossing in the southeastern province of Hakkari on October 31.

The incident occurred in the Yüksekova district, where units of the 7th Border Brigade are deployed, TRT Haber reports.

Gunfire broke out during an operation to stop individuals attempting to cross the state border illegally. Infantry contract soldier Yusuf Sait Ünlü was wounded in the incident.

He was airlifted by helicopter to Hakkari State Hospital, but doctors were unable to save his life.

Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense expressed condolences to the family of the deceased serviceman.
