Turkmenistan is stepping up efforts to promote its tourism potential, presenting a mix of ancient heritage, desert landscapes and modern infrastructure at the 35th meeting of the Council of Heads of CIS State News Agencies.

Gulyalek Mukhammetberdyeva, head of the International Press and Information Department of the State News Agency of Turkmenistan, said the country’s tourism industry is expanding with the support of the government, Kabar reports.

More than 70 private tourism companies are currently operating in Turkmenistan, offering a growing range of travel routes and services. The industry is also attracting young professionals with foreign-language skills to serve visitors from CIS countries, the Asia-Pacific region and Europe.

Turkmenistan is seeking to build on its rich cultural heritage, with its Turkmen carpets and Akhal-Teke horses among the country's distinctive attractions.

The country is also home to three UNESCO World Heritage sites - the ancient cities of Merv, Nisa and Kunya Urgench - offering visitors a glimpse into the region's long history.

Beyond its historic monuments, Turkmenistan has nine state nature reserves, including Badkhyz, Repetek and Khazar. Its vast deserts, distinctive dunes and remote landscapes are being promoted as destinations for adventure and nature tourism.

Particular attention was given to the Avaza National Tourist Zone, which has been developing since 2008 with new hotels and tourism infrastructure.

The Caspian Sea resort is set to attract further international attention in October 2026, when Avaza will host the CIS Council of Heads of State alongside cultural events.

The presentation also highlighted Ashgabat's modern architecture and landmarks, alongside Turkmenistan's historical sites and desert scenery.

Participants at the CIS meeting were shown a video showcasing the country's ancient monuments, natural landscapes, Avaza's modern facilities and the capital's major attractions.

With investment in tourism infrastructure and growing participation from private companies, Turkmenistan is positioning its historic cities, Caspian resorts and desert landscapes as key attractions for international visitors.
