Uzbek Man Faces Questioning After Brutal Taxi Driver Attack in Korea

A nearly 30-year-old Uzbek citizen is suspected of violently assaulting a 50-year-old South Korean taxi driver in the city of Hwaseong, South Korea.

The incident occurred on October 18 in the Hyangnam area, according to mt.co.kr.

The suspect was using his private car to transport passengers illegally for payment.

When a local taxi driver attempted to stop him and record the violation on camera, the suspect reportedly punched him in the jaw. The victim lost consciousness and fell to the ground.

Surveillance footage reportedly shows the attacker continuing to kick and punch the unconscious man before fleeing the scene without providing first aid.

South Korean police identified the suspect on October 22 after analyzing video footage. He is expected to be summoned for formal questioning soon. Depending on the findings of the victim’s medical examination, the charges against the suspect could be upgraded.

Local authorities say illegal passenger transport services arranged through Telegram are widespread in Hwaseong.

In May, cases involving 29 foreign nationals, including Uzbek citizens, suspected of engaging in similar illegal activities were referred to prosecutors.

Police and immigration authorities plan to intensify joint inspections and enforcement operations before the end of the year to crack down on unauthorized passenger transport services.
