Armenia’s government will resign on August 2 as the country moves to form a new cabinet following the parliamentary elections held on June 7.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced the decision during a government meeting, Interfax reports.

“We will resign on Sunday, August 2. Today is the last government meeting in this composition,” Pashinyan said.

He explained that under Armenia’s constitutional procedure, the outgoing government must resign on the day the newly elected National Assembly holds its first sitting.

Following the resignation, the president will nominate as prime minister a candidate put forward by the political party that holds a majority in the National Assembly.

Pashinyan’s ruling Civil Contract party won the June 7 parliamentary election, securing enough seats to form the new government independently.
