Azerbaijan Arrests Internationally Wanted Suspect Over Separatist Activities

Azerbaijani authorities have arrested Murad Fetiyev, who was internationally wanted on suspicion of organizing separatist activities, the State Security Service (SSS) of Azerbaijan said.

According to the SSS, Fetiyev was placed on an international wanted list in 2025. Following ongoing operational and investigative measures, he was brought to Azerbaijan and placed under investigation, The Caspian Post reports.

The investigation established that Fetiyev had allegedly acted on instructions from radical centres controlled from abroad, creating various social media groups to undermine Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and incite national hatred and hostility.

He reportedly recruited members of an ethnic minority living both abroad and in Azerbaijan who held extremist views into these groups.

The SSS said Fetiyev also organized the selection of individuals with particularly radical views from among the group members, the collection of information about key strategic facilities in Azerbaijan, and the dissemination of explicit calls for terrorism.

Earlier, several members of the same criminal group were arrested and held criminally liable for allegedly preparing to attack a state-owned enterprise and take people hostage in an attempt to undermine Azerbaijan's defence capabilities and economic security.

Court proceedings have now begun in the criminal case against Fetiyev. He faces charges under Article 214-2 (public calls for terrorism), Article 283-1 (incitement of national, racial, social or religious hatred and hostility), and other provisions of Azerbaijan's Criminal Code.
