Azerbaijan Repatriates Citizen Detained in Iran

Farid Safarli, an Azerbaijani citizen who had been detained in Iran in 2023, has been repatriated, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry and the State Security Service said in a joint statement.

“In accordance with the instructions of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Safarli Farid Gabil, a citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan, who was detained in the Islamic Republic of Iran in 2023, was transferred from the Islamic Republic of Iran on January 18, 2025, and returned to Azerbaijan within the framework of international legal cooperation and mutual procedure,” said the statement, the Caspian Post reports.

According to the statement, following the medical examination, Farid Safarli was reunited with his family.

“Necessary measures will be taken to protect the rights and interests of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan outside the country,” it added.
