Rizvan Nabiyev, head of the delegation of Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis to the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA), participated in the meeting of the Standing Committee on Political Affairs of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly held in Baghdad, Iraq, on January 11-13.
Key speakers included Jabar Al Kinani, first Deputy Head of Foreign Relations Committee of Iraqi Council of Representatives, chairman of the Standing Committee on Political Affairs of the APA, Rizvan Nabiyev, head of the delegation of Azerbaijan`s Milli Majlis to the APA, and Mohammad Reza Majidi, Secretary General of the APA, The Caspian Post reports, citing AZERTAC.
In his speech, Rizvan Nabiyev highlighted the current challenges faced by the Asian region and the role of the assembly in addressing ongoing challenges. He described Azerbaijan’s membership in the D-8 Organization as a reflection of the country’s commitment to cooperation with Asian countries and members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Giving an overview of the right of return of Western Azerbaijanis forcibly expelled by Armenia in the late 1980s, Nabiyev emphasized that this return would serve as a vital step not only for the restoration of humanitarian rights, but also for the strengthening of peace and mutual trust in the region.
He further noted that the end of Armenia’s occupation of Azerbaijani territories has led to a new political situation, with de facto peace and stability now established. He also highlighted the peace treaty proposed to Armenia at the initiative of President Ilham Aliyev, as well as the border delimitation and demarcation.
The APA meeting's agenda included deliberations on eight draft resolutions, addressing key topics, including good governance, the rule of law and judicial empowerment, best parliamentary practices, fostering prosperity in Asia through cooperation, collaboration between Asian parliaments and governments, harmonious development through democracy, parliamentary support for the Palestinian people, and enhancing cooperation among APA members to protect and promote multilateralism.
Additionally, APA Bureau meeting and APA working group meetings were held with amendments to the APA Charter and APA Calendar of Events 2025 reviewed.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the heads of the delegations of the participating countries were received by Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, Speaker of the Council of Representatives of Iraq.
Currently, the Azerbaijani Parliament (Milli Majlis) chairs the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, which includes 43 countries from the region.
