Azerbaijani Scholar Secures Key Role in UN Committee on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights

Dr. Nadir Adilov, Doctor of Philosophy in Law and Associate Professor from Azerbaijan, has been elected Vice-Chair of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR), representing the Central and Eastern European region.

This historic appointment marks the first time Azerbaijan has secured representation in the committee’s leadership, The Caspian Post informs via local media.

The election took place during the 78th session of CESCR in Geneva, which also saw the appointment of the new Chair and other Vice-Chairs:

Chair: Preeti Saran (India - Asia and Pacific region)

Vice-Chairs: Nadir Adilov (Azerbaijan - Central and Eastern Europe), Giuseppe Palmisano (Italy - Western Europe and Other States), Asraf Ally Caunhye (Mauritania - Africa region)

Under CESCR’s procedural rules, leadership elections are held every two years. The committee, comprising 18 independent experts, monitors the implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights by States Parties.

Dr. Adilov was first elected to the committee for the 2021-2024 term and was subsequently re-elected for 2025-2028 at the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) meeting. In addition to his UN role, he serves as Chairman of the Board of the Mediation Council and Deputy Chairman of the Turkic World Mediators Union.
