Saudi Arabia has allocated $3 million to support humanitarian demining efforts in Azerbaijan, as the two countries expand cooperation aimed at reducing the risks posed by landmines.

The announcement was made by Saudi Foreign Ministry representative Salem Al-Qahtani in Baku during the 4th International Conference on "Humanitarian Demining for Urban Recovery: Setting Standards of Excellence for Safe Settlements", The Caspian Post reports.

Al-Qahtani said that Saudi Arabia was expanding its efforts and cooperation with Azerbaijan by providing financial support for mine-clearance operations.

He noted that the funding is intended to reduce mine-related risks, create safer conditions for civilians-particularly women and children-and support the reconstruction of affected areas and the return of internally displaced people.

Slovenia’s First Gentleman and ITF Board of Trustees member Aleš Musar said Azerbaijan’s experience in mine action deserves greater international recognition and attention.

Musar said that it would be beneficial for the international community to learn more about the results achieved and the lessons that could be drawn from Azerbaijan’s experience.

Meanwhile, UN Mine Action Programme (UNMAS) Chief Mark Connelly stressed that clearing urban areas requires a comprehensive, phased approach and close coordination among governments, donors, humanitarian organizations and technical agencies.

He also highlighted the role of modern information systems, including IMSMA, which enables the rapid exchange of data on hazardous areas and supports more effective mine-action operations.
