A natural compound found in pomegranates may help support healthy brain function and slow some effects of aging, according to new research that is attracting attention among scientists studying cognitive health.

Researchers found that pomegranate extract, rich in a powerful polyphenol called punicalagin, was associated with improvements in thinking and executive function among older adults, The Caspian Post reports via ElEconomista.

The study involved participants aged 55 to 70 who took pomegranate extract daily for 12 weeks. By the end of the trial, researchers observed better performance in cognitive measures linked to decision-making, planning, and mental processing. Participants also showed lower levels of inflammatory markers commonly associated with aging.

Beyond brain health, the findings suggested additional benefits. Those taking the supplement experienced reductions in systolic blood pressure and signs of chronic inflammation, factors that have been linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders.

Scientists believe the fruit’s potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may help protect the brain and support healthier aging. Punicalagin, one of the key bioactive compounds in pomegranates, has long been studied for its potential role in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation throughout the body.

While the results are promising, researchers caution that more long-term studies are needed to confirm whether pomegranate extract can consistently help prevent age-related cognitive decline.

Still, the findings add to growing evidence that diet and nutrition may play an important role in maintaining brain health and mental sharpness later in life, making the humble pomegranate a fruit worth watching in the field of healthy aging.
