Kyrgyzstan's Ministry of Internal Affairs has successfully thwarted an attempt by a group planning to destabilize the country and seize power ahead of the upcoming local council elections on November 17, 2024.
The Ministry announced the detention of several individuals suspected of orchestrating mass riots and attempting to undermine the nation’s socio-political stability, The Caspian Post reports.
According to the ministry's statement, the group had been preparing to incite widespread unrest with the goal of disrupting the government. Authorities acted quickly to prevent the situation from escalating, ensuring the safety and security of the country.
The plot involved organizing sports events and competitions in the suburbs of Bishkek, where the perpetrators planned to provoke violence under the guise of national games. They intended to use these events to make anti-constitutional calls, stir unrest, and create the conditions for a violent seizure of power.
Based on the evidence collected during the investigation, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has initiated criminal proceedings under Kyrgyzstan's Criminal Code, specifically Articles 36 to 278, Part 1. These charges relate to the preparation of mass disorder, including acts of violence, looting, arson, property destruction, and the potential use of firearms or explosives.
Several individuals connected to the plot have already been detained, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are continuing their efforts to maintain the country's stability and ensure a peaceful electoral process in the lead-up to the November 2024 elections.
