Türkiye Eyes Major Electricity Interconnection Project With Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria

Türkiye is holding talks with Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria on a major electricity transmission project that would connect the four countries, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said Monday.

Ankara sees regional connectivity as a way to diversify energy supplies. It is pursuing pipeline projects with neighboring countries, including Iraq and Syria, while seeking to expand cross-border links for oil, natural gas and electricity, The Caspian Post reports, citing Daily Sabah.

“We are discussing a major mega interconnection project, an electricity transmission line project, between Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria and Türkiye.”

He made the remarks on the sidelines of the 25th World Petroleum Council (WPC) Energy Congress in Riyadh. He did not provide details on the project's cost, capacity or timeline.

Bayraktar said Türkiye also seeks to expand energy cooperation with other countries, particularly Libya, Iraq, Pakistan and Uzbekistan.

According to the minister, Türkiye's investments in recent years have strengthened regional energy supply security.

He cited the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), TurkStream, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline and the Iraq-Türkiye oil pipeline as infrastructure enabling energy flows in different directions.

Bayraktar said Türkiye aims to maximize the use of its existing infrastructure.

“We want to use our existing lines and infrastructure at the highest level. We want our lines to be full,” he said.

The Iraq-Türkiye oil pipeline has a capacity of 1.5 million barrels per day, which the minister said should be fully utilized.

Regarding natural gas, Bayraktar said Türkiye is considering using TANAP's available capacity to transport additional gas to Türkiye and onward to Europe.

He added that investments in regasification terminals and liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure would also create opportunities to import more LNG and supply it to European markets.

Bayraktar emphasized that Türkiye continues to pursue a strategy of diversifying its energy sources and developing projects to strengthen energy security across the region and Europe while meeting its domestic needs.
