Uzbekistan’s Gas Exports to China Drop Sharply

Uzbekistan’s natural gas exports to China fell by 2.5 times in January-March 2026, while the country imported more gas than it exported during the period, according to data from the National Statistics Committee reviewed by Spot.

Gas imports from Turkmenistan and Russia more than doubled to $360.5 million in the first quarter. After reaching $167.6 million in January, imports dropped to $34.6 million in February before rebounding to $158.3 million in March, The Caspian Post reports.

At the same time, Uzbekistan’s gas exports to China declined to $36.7 million. Supplies were suspended in January and resumed in February at $7.1 million. In March, exports surged more than fivefold month-on-month to $29.4 million.

However, figures released by China’s General Administration of Customs differ sharply from Uzbekistan’s statistics. Chinese data showed Uzbekistan exported only about $1 million worth of gas during the first quarter, creating a discrepancy of more than $35 million.

Chinese customs authorities also reported that Uzbekistan halted gas deliveries in February and March. Compared to the $70.8 million recorded in the same period of 2025, exports have reportedly fallen 65-fold.

Russia remained China’s largest gas supplier in the first quarter with exports worth $2.3 billion, followed by Turkmenistan at $1.88 billion. Myanmar supplied $384.1 million, Kazakhstan $117.8 million, and Uzbekistan $1.08 million.
