Georgia is building the country’s largest arch bridge as part of the Kviesheti-Kobi road project in the Kazbegi area.
The bridge will be more than 400 meters long and stand 166 meters above the bottom of the gorge. Its main arch will span 300 meters, according to Pro Georgia.
Construction crews are expected to connect the two upper sections of the arch by the end of October. Once that work is completed, the bridge supports and supporting structures will be installed on the arch.
The Kviesheti-Kobi project includes 23 kilometers of two-lane asphalt-concrete road, five bridges and five tunnels, as well as the reconstruction of one existing bridge.
Construction of the 9-kilometer main and evacuation tunnels has already been completed. Work on the main tunnel has included the production of ventilation panels, while the evacuation tunnel has received its reinforced-concrete lining. Electromechanical systems are also being installed.
The new road is expected to improve the safety and reliability of traffic toward Kobi and reduce winter travel restrictions on the route.
