Iran has carried out the executions of Ali Hemmati and Majid Nikandish, who were arrested during January protests in the northeastern city of Mashhad.

The executions took place at Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad after Iran’s Supreme Court rejected appeals and upheld death sentences issued by the city’s Revolutionary Court, Iran International reports.

Hemmati and Nikandish were convicted under charges including “moharebeh,” or “waging war against God,” as well as offenses related to national security.

Iranian authorities accused the two men of involvement in the deaths of four security personnel and alleged that their actions were part of an attempted coup.

Nikandish, 25, from the city of Quchan, was arrested on January 20. He was held in solitary confinement and subjected to interrogations aimed at obtaining a confession.
