Iran has increased its military presence on Kharg Island amid concerns over a possible US ground operation, according to American intelligence sources.

According to the sources, Tehran has deployed additional troops and strengthened air defense systems on the island, a key strategic site in the Persian Gulf, The Caspian Post reports, citing CNN.

Iranian forces have also reportedly placed anti-personnel and anti-tank mines around Kharg Island and along nearby coastal areas considered potential landing zones for US troops.

US officials quoted by CNN warned that any ground assault would carry serious risks, noting that the island’s layered defenses could result in significant casualties.
