Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that two oil tankers exploded in the Strait of Hormuz, with a fire breaking out aboard one of the vessels, which it described as a supertanker.
The tankers attempted to navigate through an “unauthorized route” under the protection of the US Navy. The vessels switched off their navigation and identification systems before attempting the passage, according to IRNA.
Since the start of the military conflict with the US, Iran has declared that it has the right to control shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and introduced its own navigation rules. Iranian forces have reportedly mined parts of the waterway and demanded that vessels coordinate their routes with Tehran.
US President Donald Trump, however, has repeatedly said that Iran does not control shipping through the strait.
