Iran’s Prosecutor General Mohammad Movahedi Azad has threatened participants in the mass protests that have been ongoing across the country for the past two weeks with the death penalty.
Movahedi Azad warned that all protesters could be charged as “enemies of God,” or mohareb-a crime that carries the death sentence under Iranian law, The Caspian Post reports via foreign media.
He said the punishment would apply to those accused of rioting, terrorism, damaging property, undermining public security, as well as anyone who assisted them.
The prosecutor general also instructed judicial authorities to speed up legal proceedings and show no “leniency or compassion” toward those involved in the unrest.
Earlier, Tehran Prosecutor Ali Salehi also stated that protesters could face charges of mohareb, signaling a tougher stance by the authorities as nationwide demonstrations continue.
