An Iranian court has sentenced a man to death after convicting him of espionage for the United States and Israel, as well as involvement with what authorities described as an anti-government terrorist organization.

The convicted individual, Mehdi Khanki, was found guilty of spying and activities deemed a threat to the country's national security, The Caspian Post reports via IRIB.

Iranian investigators said Khanki was arrested on January 21 in Alborz Province, north of Tehran.

A search of his residence uncovered a large cache of weapons-related materials, including five pistols, around 500 live rounds of ammunition, nine magazines, remote detonators, 11 improvised grenades, 12 flash-bang devices, 30 homemade grenade launchers, and components and raw materials intended for manufacturing high-powered explosives.

According to the investigation, Khanki admitted during questioning that he had joined a banned radical organization in 2022 and had carried out activities against Iran's national security.

Prosecutors also allege that shortly before widespread protests erupted late last year, Khanki received firearms and communication equipment through hidden drop-off locations in the cities of Karaj and Mahdasht, acting on instructions from his handlers.
