Iran has warned that it would target regional infrastructure, including energy facilities, if the United States attacks bridges or power plants inside Iran, according to an Iranian military source speaking on Wednesday.

The warning came after US President Donald Trump threatened to strike Iranian infrastructure in response to attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, The Caspian Post reports, citing Anadolu Agency.

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump said the United States would bomb an Iranian bridge or power plant each time Tehran attacked a commercial vessel transiting the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

In comments to the semi-official Tasnim News Agency, the military source said Iran has a “steel determination” to assert its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz and “would never allow the waterway to become a source of threats” against the country again.

The source said commercial shipping through the strait would continue to be safe as long as vessels coordinated with Iranian authorities and complied with the arrangements established by Tehran.

He added that, if those conditions were not met, Iran would continue exercising what it described as its firm resolve to maintain control over the strategic waterway as part of safeguarding its long-term security.

“If the US targeted any Iranian bridge or power plant, Tehran would respond by striking regional infrastructure, including energy facilities in which Washington has interests,” the source warned.

The military source also said the United States should, by now, be fully aware after the past 10 days that Iran has the capability to strike any target it chooses. He added that any “gamble” by Trump “would once again end in failure.”

The warning comes as US and Iranian forces continue exchanging strikes despite a Pakistan-brokered framework agreement signed in June that was intended to end the war that began in February and pave the way for a lasting peace agreement.
