A US F-35 fighter jet was forced to make an emergency landing at an American air base in the Middle East after being struck by what is believed to be Iranian fire, according to two sources familiar with the incident.

US Central Command spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins said the fifth-generation stealth aircraft was on a combat mission over Iran when it encountered the incident, The Caspian Post reports, citing CNN.

He confirmed that the jet landed safely and that an investigation is underway.

“The aircraft landed safely, and the pilot is in stable condition,” Hawkins said, noting that the circumstances surrounding the event are still being examined.

If confirmed, the incident would mark the first time Iran has successfully struck a US aircraft since the conflict began in late February. Both the United States and Israel have been deploying F-35 jets in the war, with each aircraft valued at over $100 million.
