A farewell ceremony for former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is taking place in the Iraqi city of Najaf, following the transfer of his body to the country’s holy Shiite sites.

Khamenei's body was brought to the sacred city of Karbala on the evening of July 7, where mourning ceremonies continued before the procession moved to Najaf, The Caspian Post reports via Khabar.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who traveled to Iraq to attend the ceremony, returned to Tehran overnight amid an exchange of strikes between the United States and Iran.

The funeral events are also being attended by prominent Iraqi Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.
