US President Donald Trump confirmed that he has had direct communications with Iranian officials, warning that American naval forces are stationed near Iran, while emphasizing his preference for a diplomatic resolution.
Trump's comments come as the US has assembled what Trump called previously an "Armada" led by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, currently sitting off the Omani coast, last logged 800km south of Iranian land, The Caspian Post reports, citing bne Intellinews.
Other military assets have also arrived in the region, with reports of military presence in most surrounding countries of Iran, including the UAE, Jordan, and Qatar. British Typhoon fighter jets have also been situated in the Persian Gulf, according to previous reports.
"We have a lot of very big, very powerful ships sailing to Iran right now, and it would be great if we didn't have to use them," Trump told reporters outside the official opening of First Lady Melania Trump's biographic movie.
"I told them two things. Number one, no nuclear, and number two, stop killing protesters. They're killing them by the thousands. I stopped 837 hangings two weeks ago. But they're gonna have to do something about it," Trump continued before being pulled away from journalists by the first lady.
Earlier bne IntelliNews reported that the administration is now considering special commando raids on Iranian nuclear facilities not yet destroyed.
According to a potential floated plan, the US aims to inflict substantial damage on Iran's missile and nuclear programs and to weaken the institution of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Israeli media reported.
Another potential attack is to strike military and leadership targets, creating conditions that would enable security forces or rival factions to replace Khamenei through induced chaos.
Israel's security and political leadership is advocating for a third option, namely a joint US-Israeli assault on Iran's ballistic missile infrastructure, according to the report.
On January 29, the United States reportedly convened senior defence and intelligence officials from Israel and Saudi Arabia for Iran-focused discussions in Washington.
Israeli officials shared intelligence on potential Iranian targets, bne Intellinews explained, while Saudi Arabia pushed for diplomatic solutions to prevent broader regional conflict.
