US President Donald Trump said that “no one knows” who will ultimately lead Iran following the reported killing of the country’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, despite claims that his son Mojtaba Khamenei has been appointed as the new leader.

Trump made the remarks while addressing a gathering of Republican members of the House of Representatives in Florida, The Caspian Post reports via foreign media.

“Their terrorist leaders are either already dead or counting the minutes until their death,” Trump said. “And now no one knows who will run the country.”

Trump, who has previously described Mojtaba Khamenei as an unacceptable candidate to lead Iran, insisted that he should have a role in determining the country’s future leadership.

The US president also hinted that American and Israeli forces could target Mojtaba Khamenei, saying that “if he doesn’t receive our approval, he won’t last long.”
