Iranian authorities do not intend to restore full internet access, according to an Iranian lawmaker who said the country still faces ongoing security threats despite being in what he called a state of “neither war nor peace.”

Ali Yazdikhah, deputy chairman of the Iranian parliament’s cultural committee, stated that internet restrictions introduced by the Supreme National Security Council will remain in effect, The Caspian Post reports, citing Iran International.

Yazdikhah noted that access to the global internet would continue to be restricted and available only to individuals and institutions deemed to have specialised professional requirements.

He also defended the policy, arguing that domestic digital platforms are able to satisfy “more than 90 percent” of the population’s online needs.

Iran has repeatedly enforced internet limitations during times of political unrest and periods of increased regional tension, citing national security reasons for the measures.
